What to Expect When you Visit Joyce's Bridal
Bridal shopping does not have to feel formal, intimidating, or rushed. Joyce’s Bridal is located in the countryside of southern Highland County, next to my home. My shop may feel a little more casual than a traditional bridal salon, but that is part of what makes the experience special.
My goal is for you to feel relaxed, comfortable, and free to be yourself while we explore your options. You do not need to arrive knowing exactly what you want, what looks best on you, or even where to begin. We will figure it out together.
Before Your Appointment
You are welcome to bring family members or friends with you. I do not have a strict guest limit, although five or fewer guests is usually the most comfortable and practical number for the space.
Children are welcome, too. Just keep in mind that bridal appointments can feel long to children, especially once we begin discussing measurements and dress details. Supervised snacks are allowed in the entryway of the shop.
You do not need to know what type of dress you are looking for before you arrive. In fact, many brides choose something completely different from what they originally pictured. However, if you have saved pictures of dresses, sleeves, necklines, lace, or other details you like, please bring them or have them available on your phone. They can help me understand your preferences, even when the exact dress in the picture is not available.
You do not need to bring special undergarments, shoes, or a petticoat unless you would like to. It is helpful, however, to think about:
-
Whether you may need a strapless or low-back bra
-
Approximately how high your wedding shoes will be
-
Whether you are likely to wear a petticoat or crinoline slip
Your heel height and the fullness created by a petticoat can affect the length measurement for your dress. You do not have to make every decision before your appointment, but thinking about these details ahead of time can be helpful.
How Long is An Appointment?
Appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes, but it is very common for a complete appointment to take closer to 90 minutes. After you select a dress, I will take your measurements and spend time writing down the details of your dress, including any customization choices.
I will never announce that your time is up or rush you out of the shop.
On Saturdays, another appointment may be scheduled 60 minutes after yours begins. You are still welcome to stay and continue considering your options, but I may no longer be able to give you my undivided attention after the first hour. The next family may also need the mirror and open space closest to the seating area, so I may ask you to move to another mirror while you continue looking at your dress.
Joyce’s Bridal is meant to be a friendly, flexible, and enjoyable place for everyone. Every bride and family deserves to feel comfortable and respected while they are here.
Trying on Dresses
You may try on as many sample dresses as you would like during your appointment.
My sample dresses range from approximately size 14 through size 26. I currently have:
-
About 25 sample dresses in sizes 14–18
-
About 10 sample dresses in sizes 20–26
-
Several off-the-rack and purchasable sample dresses in sizes 8-26.
The sample dresses are more than just the dresses you see hanging in the shop. I like to think of each one as a starting point for several possible versions.
Customizing Your Dress
One of the things I am most pleased to offer is the ability to customize many of my wedding dresses. Depending on the dress, you may be able to:
-
Add different types of sleeves
-
Change the neckline
-
Add lining or choose a lighter-weight lining
-
Change the length of the train
-
Change the lace color
-
Change the color underneath the lace
-
Order the entire dress in another available color
-
Combine features from two different dresses
For example, you may love the skirt and lace on one dress but prefer the sleeves or neckline from another. In many cases, we can combine those ideas.
Most customizable dresses can also be made according to your individual measurements rather than ordered from a standard size chart. There is usually no additional charge for the available customization or made-to-measure features.
You do not have to find one sample dress that is already absolutely perfect. Sometimes the perfect dress begins with a sample you like and becomes yours through the details we choose together.
Understanding Dress Prices
I try to keep all wedding dress prices under $1,000. The price generally depends on which of these three categories the dress falls into:
Customizable, Made-to-Measure Dresses
Most new customizable dresses are approximately $725–$950. Available customizations and made-to-measure ordering are usually included in the price.
Sample Dresses
A sample dress is one of the dresses used for trying on in the shop. When a sample dress is available for purchase, it is usually approximately $150 less than ordering a new dress in the same style.
Off-the-Rack Dresses
Off-the-rack dresses are available to purchase directly from the shop and generally range from $200–$600.
Ordering Timeline
Most ordered dresses take approximately three months to arrive.
When possible, I recommend allowing additional time after the dress arrives for a final fitting and any small adjustments that may be needed. However, not having three months before your wedding does not necessarily mean you are out of options.
A rush order is available on many dresses for a small fee. Rush orders arrive in approximately six weeks. Off-the-rack and available sample dresses may also be good options for shorter timelines.
Early Browsing Appointments
You are welcome to visit while you are still gathering ideas. However, if your wedding is approximately 18–24 months away and you are mainly interested in casually browsing rather than choosing a dress, a weekday appointment is the best and most courteous time to visit.
Saturdays are usually the busiest and are especially helpful for brides who are closer to making a decision or placing an order.
Payments, Invoices, Receipts
I accept cash and credit cards. Payment plans are available for most dresses. The first payment is generally approximately 35% of the dress price. The initial payment must be made in person, but later payment arrangements can be discussed when your order is placed.
Invoices and receipts will be sent to your email so you have a clear record of your dress, payments, and order details.
Most Importantly
Please do not worry about arriving with everything figured out. You do not need to know the correct bridal terminology, your ideal silhouette, or exactly what will look best on you.
Joyce’s Bridal is a comfortable, down-to-earth place with more choices than you might expect. We can look at dresses, discuss changes, combine ideas, work within your budget, and take the experience one step at a time.
Come prepared to explore the possibilities—not to follow someone else’s idea of what bridal shopping is supposed to be like.
